In 2004, a serious road accident changed the course of Chikumbutso Billy’s life forever. The crash left him with a spinal injury that paralyzed his legs, forcing him to confront a future filled with uncertainty. As a father of three, he relied on small-scale farming across two acres of land, but reduced mobility and limited resources made providing for his family a daily struggle.
“Even accessing basic farm inputs was a challenge,” he recalls.
But Billy refused to let disability define his future. In 2020, determined to break free from poverty, he made the bold decision to treat farming as a business.
“Farming is already difficult in the village. Adding disability meant I was facing double the challenge. But I knew that without taking bold steps, nothing would change,” he said.
With the support of his wife and unwavering determination, he began rebuilding his life, one season at a time.
What started as survival farming has since grown into an 11-hectare commercial agribusiness. Billy now produces maize, popcorn, and soybeans, while also diversifying into livestock with more than 20 goats and 180 chickens. His consistency and hard work, achieved without formal training or external support, have transformed his fortunes. During the 2024/25 farming season, he generated over MWK 25 million, enabling him to purchase a vehicle for his operations, employ four permanent workers, and achieve financial independence.
“Farming has completely changed my life. I no longer lack anything,” he proudly shares.
Today, Billy is not only a farmer but an entrepreneur and a source of inspiration in his community. His vision is to build a large agribusiness company that creates employment opportunities for young people. His journey demonstrates that disability does not define ability, and that resilience and determination can turn hardship into opportunity.
